Progressive Components Introduces
New Slide Retainers

Progressive Components, a leading supplier of tooling components for the injection mold, blow mold and die cast die industries worldwide, introduces the latest component utilizing Friction Free™ technology: the Slide Retainer.

For retention of a mold's side actions, Progressive now offers a standard new Slide Retainer that eliminates the resistance and abrasion that occurs with other slide locking products.

Progressive’s exclusive Slide Retention Technology, dubbed SRT, comprises five units in both metric and inch standard sizes. The SRT features a roller that engages into a groove within the side action assembly. An engineered spring has been proven after millions of cycles tested.

Advantages for the molder include maintenance free operation, and reliable slide retention. For the mold builder, this item is significantly more compact that other units and easier to machine, yet it holds a greater amount of weight.

Suitable for any injection mold application, but especially advantageous in Clean Room, Medical, Food Packaging, or Electronics applications, Friction Free components offer new advantages for molders and mold builders.

Quick Disconnects for Cavity Pressure and Cavity Temperature

With the new PRIAMUS quick disconnects for cavity pressure and cavity temperature, mold inserts can be mounted and dismounted by a simple plug connection while the sensors remain in the mold insert.

This patent pending application is especially fail-safe because the sensors do not stay in the mold platen as a "bolt" and can therefore not be damaged. They stay safely packed in the mold insert even after dismounting.

The essential advantage of this system is that different mold inserts with different sensor positions can be used without changing the position of the quick disconnects. Unlike a sensor which is installed in the mold platen itself, the sensor position can still be selected very flexible according to the design of the molded part while the dimension of the mold insert is of no importance.

Quick disconnects are available for PRIAMUS cavity temperature sensors as well as for PRIAMUS cavity pressure sensors with sensitivity detection (PRIASEDTM).

Stratasys Introduces Large-Format Polyjet Rapid Prototyping System – The Eden500v

Stratasys recently introduced a large-format PolyJet™ rapid prototyping system — the Eden500V. It is the newest member of the Eden line of PolyJet systems, manufactured by Objet Geometries and distributed in North America by Stratasys.

Besides the PolyJet hallmarks of high speed, feature detail, and surface smoothness, the Eden500V has a larger build envelope. It measures 19.7 x 15.7 x 7.9 in. (500 x 400 x 200 mm), permitting the construction of bigger models than previous PolyJet systems. The large build envelope also allows multiple models to be produced simultaneously in a single run. The Eden500V uses four jumbo-size material cartridges, which support the larger builds, so the machine can operate longer unattended, improving productivity over existing PolyJet systems.

New speed and resolutions settings allow users to match these prop-erties to specific projects. In high-speed mode, the speed effectively doubles that of previous PolyJet systems. This is achieved by reducing horizontal resolution to 30-microns (0.0011 in.). The high-resolution setting of 16-micron (0.0006 in.) layers enables detail and surface finish smoothness that rivals any competitive process. Both settings offer excellent quality, with an X and Y resolution of up to 600 dpi.

Like previous PolyJet systems, the Eden500V employs a clean, safe modeling process. Sealed liquid resin cartridges are inserted into the machine, which then jets out only the amount needed to build the model. While each model layer is built, it is simultaneously cured with UV light. When models are removed, they are already fully cured, so no exposure to resin occurs throughout the entire process.

First Commercial NC Software for Micro Milling

Cimatron Ltd., a leading global provider of integrative CAD/CAM software solutions for toolmakers, recently announced the first commercial NC software for micro-milling – machining of tiny, highly precise micro-components and their molds. The solution is available as a feature of Cimatron’s newly released flagship product suite CimatronE 7.0.

Micro-system technology has become one of the most dynamic growing industries in the world, and confronts manufacturers of tools and components with unique challenges. Parts are shrinking, while increasing in complexity; miniature features must be machined with extreme accuracy, and work on the micro level requires special tools – as small as 0.1mm in diameter – to achieve the required accuracy and surface quality.

Cimatron’s solution meets and exceeds the requirements of micro-tooling: a unique algorithm and special machining strategies successfully apply CimatronE’s proven CAD/CAM functionality to support milling at levels traditional NC software cannot achieve. Characteristics of the solution include: high precision, tight machining tolerance, effective handling of imperfect imported geometrical data, direct surface milling, and 3- & 5-axis toolpaths.
