Mastercam’s Multiaxis Machining Increases Speed and Finish

Multiaxis machining can dramatically increase a shop’s competitiveness, and Mastercam’s multiaxis machining offers a wide range of multiaxis machining strategies – both basic and advanced.

Port5ax and Flow5ax Toolpaths – These toolpaths now include a new feature that allows an overlap or blend to be added at the beginning and end of a toolpath. This feature is very useful in creating better finishes where toolpaths may need to meet from opposite directions. Several options are available for controlling the start and end of a port or flowline multiaxis toolpath.

TrueSolid 5-axis Verify – Now included in Mastercam’s multiaxis machining, this feature uses solid modeling technology for toolpath simulation. After verifying a part in TrueSolid mode, rotate and magnify the part to more closely check features, surface finish, or scallops.

Smart Interface – Mastercam’s advanced multiaxis machining lets you choose what type of project you are doing, and adjusts the interface to show exactly what you need to complete your job.

Other multiaxis features include:

  • General speed improvements

  • Advanced gouge checking and 5-axis safe zone around parts help ensure safe cuts in even the most complex operations

  • Machine 5-axis curves with independent definitions of tool side angle and lead/lag angle

  • Special options for machining cylinder heads and converting probe data to machinable geometries

HASCO Introduces Contourable Gating Insert

HASCO has further extended its range of gating inserts and now offers even greater design scope for tunnel-type (submarine) gates with its new contourable gating insert Z10650/.. .

The gating inserts are provided with an added stock and thus are individually contourable, allowing direct adaptation to the contours of the mold. This results in new possibilities for the individual design of the molded part.  No evidence of the gate can be seen on the upper side of the part as a result of improved gate quality.

The inserts are produced by the MIM process and made of highly wear-resistant hot-work steel 1.3343. They are available in three sizes. The mold maker saves a considerable amount of time by using the gating inserts and can rely on clean separation of the sprue.

Uddeholm Introduces Ramax LH

Uddeholm is noted for introducing first-class tooling materials.  The new steel grade from Uddeholm, Ramax LH, is a top-level tool grade for mold bases, with excellent machinablility offered from a complete stock program.  Ramax LH also exhibits uniform hardness in all dimensions combined with very good stability.

The new stainless steel grade will give producers of mold bases, as well as toolmakers around the world, the benefit of reduced tooling costs.  In addition, it prevents corrosion that can clog water cooling channels, leading to a gradual increase in cycle times.

Users of Uddeholm Ramax LH will benefit from an optimized alloying content, leading to greatly improved machinability, thus saving valuable time.

Ecology Coatings Announces Award of
Seventh U.S. Patent

Ecology Coatings, Inc. announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded the company its seventh patent pertaining to its cleantech, environmentally friendly coatings.

Ecology Coatings' EcoQuik product family, formally launched in April 2008, is comprised of three coatings lines, clear coatings, pigmented coatings and barrier coatings, and can replace decorative chrome by enabling hard chrome substitutes for weight reduction—a significant benefit in the automotive industry. There is an increased use of physical vapor disposition (PVD) as a replacement for traditional chrome or electroplating. EcoQuik products provide a tie coat between the base product (metal or plastic) and the protective overcoat to shield against corrosion and scratches in the harshest environments. It is ideal for use in 'bright' retail packaging of personal care products, cosmetics, and electronics, where plastic is coated for a desired 'shiny' look.

Ecology's EcoQuik™ coatings provide superior wear, scratch resistance and hardness with a single application reducing coating thickness and offering versatility in applications. All of Ecology's coatings are ultraviolet curable, which provides for faster manufacturing speeds, lower energy output and a smaller manufacturing footprint. Additionally, the cleantech coatings contain no harmful solvents or other additives, eliminating and protecting against potential corrosion or flash rusting.
